Exploring the Battlegrounds; How Do I Pick a Major?

Often times we are told that we need to pick a major before arriving to college. Our parents pressure us and teachers lecture on how important a major is. However, nobody tells you that you have options. Picking a major is hard, and there are a lot of resources available to you at Troy University. You are making a potential career choice that could alter the rest of your life. Use your resources to make the best decision for you.

Troy University’s Career Services office, located in Eldridge Hall, specialize in all things career. Not only do they help students determine what major they would be most happy with, they offer resume and cover letter reviews, job searching tools, and more.

Each year the Career Services department holds a Major Exploration Fair. This fair host all majors and minors. The event is held in the Trojan Center Ballrooms and features a table from every major and minor available at Troy University. From Marketing to Rehabilitation, students are given the chance to see all their options.

After signing in with your student id number, you are given access to the major tables. Teachers and other students of their particular major work together to give great information to the students that stop by. They are also equipped with brochures and pamphlets that you can take with you.

Feel free to stop by the Career Services office and take the Career Exploration self-assessments. These results help the Career Coaches find the key interest of the student in hopes of helping them find a major. Some people take this assessment just out of curiosity, but the results of these assessments can make a huge difference in your career interest.

If you would like to take your Career Exploration a bit further, the Career Services office offers a one credit hour class called “Troy 1102 Career Exploration and Planning.” The goal of this class is to help those undecided about their career identify skills, interest, and values that will help them develop their goals. This is exclusively a Troy Campus class and would definitely be an asset to anyone struggling.

Overall, picking a major is making a decision for you. No one else can do it for you. Be true to yourself and follow your heart!
