Targeting the Problem: Troy University's Learning Center


When you were in high school, did you ever receive tutoring?  Does the fear of struggling with a certain subject embarrass you? Well, college is no different. Often times our best, and worst subjects follow us to college. Troy University offers the Learning Center as a solution to the problem. Here, Abigail Leonard, the General Assistant of the Learning Center, will answer a few questions about what the Learning Center is and how students can benefit from all it has to offer.

Question 1: What is the Learning Center?

Answer: Per the Learning Center website:
"The Learning Center offers free tutoring, study groups, and peer academic skills coaching for Troy University enrolled students. We provide trained peer tutors who work with students to develop academic skills in writing, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and general studies science classes."

Question 2: What is your current position here and how did you decide to work in the Learning Center?

Answer: I am currently the GA and loved the atmosphere in the Learning Center.

Question 3: What makes the Learning Center a great resource to students?

Answer: The tutors are all great and everyone is always willing to help. The director, Patricia Harris, always strives to do what is best for students and offer the resources they need to succeed. The Learning Center is a great place to work!

The Learning Center is located in 126 Eldridge Hall (directly next door to Shakelford Hall and across the street from Pace Hall).  Each semester the hours of the Learning Center change, so keep up with them on the Troy University website to get up to date hours. The hours for Spring 2020 are:

Monday-Thursday: 9:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m.
Friday: 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
January 8 - April 28 for the regular semester
April 30 and May 1, 4, and 5 for final exams
*There is no dedicated statistics tutor for the Spring 2020 semester

We all can use resources like the Learning Center. Not only does it provide tutoring, it provides students with a chance to connect with other students who may be struggling with the same subjects they are.
