TRIO: Targeting Success in Minorities
What is TRIO?
TRIO is a federal program that
aims to provide educational outreach opportunities to those who belong to
disadvantaged groups. These groups may include disabled students, low-income
students, students of minority groups, and first generation college students. TRIO includes eight support programs to
students in disadvantaged groups.
What programs does TRIO offer at
Troy?
Upward Bound is one of the
programs offered by TRIO at Troy University. It aims to assist high school students
with their transition to college. This program is nationally funded and FREE to
those eligible.
It may be too late for some of
you to take advantage of some of these resources, but passing on this
information to other future Trojans you know is just as awesome.
The McNair Scholars Program is
one of the programs offered as a part of Troy’s TRIO program. This program
provides those serviced by TRIO the opportunity to experience graduate-level
research and support in their graduate application process. This program also
offers its scholars opportunities to represent Troy University at research
conferences and includes a research internship consisting of a Graduate Record
Exam (GRE) prep course and a Research and Graduate School Strategies course
while conducting research.
Although you may not be anywhere
near graduate school, time flies! Always be prepared to think ahead. Here are
some of the requirements for admission to the McNair Scholars Program.
Applicants must be:
·
U.S.
citizen or permanent resident
·
be determined to pursue a Doctoral Program and
show potential for success in this pursuit
·
have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
·
be a Troy University student who has a minimum
of 30 credit hours
·
be a first-generation, a low-income student, or a member of an underrepresented minority in
doctoral studies. Groups considered to be underrepresented are Hispanic/Latino,
African American, Native American/Alaska Native or Native Hawaiian/Pacific
Islander.
*Those who gain admittance are required
to attend monthly seminars, weekly advisement, workshops, faculty mentored
research project, a retreat, summer research design/graduate school 101 class,
summer GRE prep course, and a McNair Scholars Research Conference. They must
also maintain a 2.5 GPA.
As a Trojan, you must remember
that we take advantages of all the opportunities available to us in hopes that
we can become the best Trojan we can be. On campus resources definitely ease
the transition to college, so keep that in mind!
