Standing on the Front Lines: Troy University's SGA

Here on Trojan Target, we have already discussed some on campus resources available to students that help with social issues, academia, and to overall create a great Trojan experience. With this information in mind I believe now is a good time to ask ourselves “how can I be a resource for others?”

Troy University offers an array of extracurricular activities and organization that you can become a part of while attending Troy. Whether you are interested in Greek life, history, or student government; Troy has something for all of your interest. If they don’t, the opportunity for you to be a trendsetter and create your own organization is always available.

Today, we will focus on SGA as our highlighted organization on campus. SGA or Student Government Association is a student lead organization that claims that “As representatives of Troy University, we commit to excellence in leadership through service, enthusiasm, and Trojan Pride!" Student Government Organizations are a staple in middle schools, high schools, and colleges all across the country, and Troy’s SGA is uniquely catered to achieve “One Troy.”

SGA represents the student body and uses themselves as the voice of the students. In order to truly represent the students, Troy’s SGA holds town hall meetings each semester. During these meetings, students are given their opportunity to voice their opinions to other students and administration.

Although SGA is a lot of lobbying for the students, SGA puts a lot of work into student events. Welcome week and Homecoming week are two weeks that SGA dedicates the most of their time to during the fall semester. These weeks not only foster new experiences, but they also foster Trojan pride. Events may include tailgating, on campus parties, and even live music.

Some of these events are rooted in business. Events like Nightwalk are aimed to bridge the gap between students and administration over the need for security on campus. Administration invites students to take a walk of the campus and highlight areas they feel could be improved. Many of you will live on campus, and Nightwalk insures that adequate security cameras, lighting, and emergency poles are stationed in the best areas.

I hope this article gives you some insight on the opportunities afforded to you by becoming a member of SGA. Feel free to follow them on the my.troy.edu and the troy.edu websites!
